What are you making?

When I find myself at the cutting counter, the employees will often ask, "what are you making?" I want to work at a fabric store just so I can ask that very question. I would love to hear what projects people are creating in their heads and piecing together in their sewing rooms.

Sometimes I think I hear creative juices bubbling as women read the pattern books or browse and handle the prints and textures on the fabric aisles. I get a litle giddy when I'm among seamstresses; I always just want to glean a tidbit or two about their technique.

If you ever want to make my day, just ask me what I'm working on--but then again, I might talk too long about it. So as long as you're willing to tell me what project you have in your head or on the cutting table, we could sit and talk about it all day.

It is also for this reason that I want to work at a grocery store. It is, in my opinion, another place where creative juices bubble in the minds of the aisle browsers. If I was a grocery checker I would pose the same question over and over to my customers, "what are you making with all these ingredients?" I also know that 75 percent of them would stare at me blankly with nary an answer to that, because they know that they will be asking themselves that question at dinnertime tomorrow when they realize that nothing they bought will actually make a meal.

So, in case you were wondering, at the moment I am working on a meatball gnocchi for dinner and a diaper bag for my sis-in-law. Thanks for asking.

WONDER WOMAN! How do you find time to do it all? I definitely want to be you when I grow up.

You know, you really should be a writer for a newspaper or something. You could do just a small column as your hands are a bit full. I just really like your writing style.

I would looooove to be a fabric cutter at a fabric shop, too! That's one of my dream (fun) jobs. Except I rarely have an answer for people when they ask "what are you making" when I'm buying fabric. I have a bit of a fabric obsession, I like to just hoard it. haha!

Yes,
I do remember those days. Working at JoAnns and asking people, "What are you making?" Now that I'm a frequent shopper, I find myself asking other customers what they're making because I'm intrigued. Their usually just as excited as you are and I definitely am.
I really enjoy reading your "columns" on your blog.:)

I think working a fabric counter would be fun and dangerous! I would never have a paycheck to bring home. I think seeing all the fabric would just make me want to buy it all!

I'm so jealous because I can't sew a stitch. I have a bizillion ideas in my head of what I could do, but sadly I never had the time or patience to learn that skill. I can grow a garden and cook anything, but ask me to make an apron and I will begin to cry! I wish I could "make" something.

(although I'm planning a little fabric depot trip to get some fun funky home decor fabrics that I plan to stretch into living art in my living room. Stay tuned to my blog to see the results)

YEAH for me! I hope that I am the sister-in-law in question - I am so excited to have a Kristine original. It looks as if this baby will be here within the next week to 10 days - no longer than that - they will induce if they have to. I can't wait to not be pregnant anymore, but fear having a newborn again. It will be great, right????? We miss you guys! Izzie asks me every so often "when can I go to Owen's house, you know mom I have never been there" - it is adorable. We WILL make it up there sometime. Love you!
